In 1954, His Holiness Jagadguru Dr. Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswamiji, the 23rd pontiff of Jagadguru Sri Veerasimhasana Math, Sutturu, established JSS Mahavidyapeetha in Mysuru intending to promote social development through education. Over the years, the Mahavidyapeetha has established various educational institutions, including Primary schools, High schools, Pre-university and Degree Colleges, Law, Engineering, Medicine, Dental Sciences, Pharmacy, Naturopathy, Nursing, Physiotherapy, and Speech and Hearing institutions. Currently, more than 300 educational institutions are operating across the country and the world.

One of the institutions established by JSS Mahavidyapeetha is the JSS Institute of Speech and Hearing in Mysuru, which was founded in 2001. The institute has made significant contributions to society by producing quality human resources and providing affordable clinical services. Intending to cater to the needs of the disabled population in northern Karnataka, another Speech and Hearing institute was established in Dharwad in 2014. The institute was inaugurated by His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Shivarathreeshwara Deshikendra Mahaswamiji, the present pontiff of Sri Suttur Math. This institute offers Bachelor of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (BASLP) courses, making it the first of its kind in northern Karnataka.
