JSS Speech & Hearing

JSS Mahavidyapeetha established JSS Institute of Speech and Hearing, Mysuru, in 2001, as there was a need for trained professionals in Speech and Hearing to rehabilitate individuals with various communication disorders. The Institute is affiliated to University of Mysore and recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India, Govt. of India. The Institute is also recognized as a research centre by University of Mysore. Theactivities of the institute are spread over in four major domains: academic, research, clinical and public education.


The institute has been offering Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral Programs in Speech and Hearing. The institute started BASLP program in 2001, MASLP program in 2006 and the Doctoral program in Speech and Hearing (Ph.D) in 2010 and started specialized Masters Programmes [M.Sc (SLP) and M.Sc (Audiology] from the academic year 2019-20. The alumni of the institute have been working all over the world in academic, clinical, and research positions.

The Department of Audiology at JSSISH is involved in assessing and managing individuals with hearing, balance, and communication disorders across their lifespan. The audiological services offered include assessment and management of hearing, tinnitus, and balance disorders. The department is equipped with state-of-the-art instruments on par with international standards. A newborn hearing screening has been conducted with a sensitive protocol to identify hearing loss in newborns followed by fitting hearing aids or cochlear implant and aural rehabilitation. As part of inter-professional collaborative practice, the audiological services are extended to 'Belaku Clinic' intended for hearing evaluation of 'at-risk' newborns, and 'Geriatric Wellness Clinic' to assess hearing in older adults and screen for dementia. The 'Cochlear-implant' program under the government schemes such as ADIP, SAST and ESI, are also being implemented. Outreach and extension programs, including school screening, screening at old age homes, industrial hearing screening and community hearing screening in villages, are also a part of the departmental activities. Numerous resources to train students in practical aspects, such as electrophysiology, psychoacoustics, tinnitus, vestibular, cognitive linguistic, signal and electronics and simulation labs, are available. In addition, the department comprises the listening and communication training unit, earmold and hearing aid dispensing unit.

The Department of Speech-Language Pathology is one of the core departments in the institute. It contributes to assessing, managing, and counselling various speech, language and swallowing problems across age groups. Clinical Services are provided for the patients who visit the department on an outpatient and inpatient basis at JSS Multi Specialty Hospital. The department also runs special clinics, namely the Voice Clinic, to serve various neurogenic, physiological, and professional voice disorder patients. In Dysphagia Clinic we conduct screening and diagnostic assessments and rehabilitate individuals with swallowing disorder. Services are also offered at JSS PMRC (Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Canter), JSS Polytechnique for Specially Abled and JSS Sahana Special School, Cleft Clinic- in association with JSS Dental College. Conducting research, student training, and public education programs are key elements of the Department of Audiology and Department of Speech Language Pathology.
